Books

You want to expand your knowledge, then you need books. Regarding Panzers, thousands of euros can be spent. Here is a list of the books in my library. The description might be helpful in deciding which one you need first. The list is in alphabetical order by author.

Contact me if you need more information about one. The prices mentioned are what I paid and may differ considerably from current prices. Mailing the books usually adds considerably to the cost. This page contains information on the books in my shelf and will not be updated to current prices and availability.

Tigers in the mud - Otto Carius, Stackpole books
[ISBN: 0-8117-2911-7]

The combat career of German Panzer commander Otto Carius.
Don't expect a lot of photos. Also no modelling detail, but it's an interesting read giving you an idea how the Tigers were used!

A classic! Lots of detailed photos make this book very interesting to modellers.

Tiger1 and Sturmtiger in detail

2006
169 pages
€ 52,00

Tiger I and Sturmtiger in Detail - Uwe Feist & Bruce Culver, Ryton Publications
[No ISBN number]
This book was going for very high second hand prices. Fortunately it's reprinted in 2006. The reason why the book is wanted becomes obvious when it is opened. Like the title indicates: You get a lot of detail on the vehicles! Since the book is a bit dated (1992 original) you will find a quiet a number of photos you have seen before. For me also a lot of very useful new ones.

The Tiger Tank: A British View

1986
264 pages
€ 80,00

Tiger! - The Tiger Tank: A British View - David Fletcher, HMSO
[ISBN: 0-11-290426-2]

A book based almost entirely on British Military Intelligence reports. Some of the data is logically inaccurate, but the book offers lots of detail and information on how things worked. For me this book is a must have, but I can imagine not all modellers want this detailed information on subjects they do not directly need.

panzer-instandsetzung

2005
207 pages
€ 35,00

Die Panzer Instandsetzung der Wehrmacht - Lukas Friedli, Schneider Armour Research
[ISBN: 3-935107-08-0][German]

Recommended by several people doing more thorough research, this book offers information on the organisation and work involved to keep the heavy tanks rolling. Apart from the specialised information the book has a lot of photos which might be of particular interest for modellers building dioramas.

€ 23,95

[ISBN: 0-87938-954-0]

Tigers at the Front

2001
208 pages
€ 30,00

Germany's Tiger Tanks: Tigers at the Front - Thomas L. Jentz, Schiffer Publications
[ISBN: 0-7643-1339-8]

A photo study! When you have a lot of books and other info on the Tiger, you won't find many new photos in it. However, the book is a solid compilation containing interesting photos. The book will be one of the first to be consulted in search of details.

DW to Tiger1

2000
190 pages
€ 50,00

Germany's Tiger Tanks: DW to Tiger1 - Thomas L. Jentz & Hilary L. Doyle, Schiffer Publications
[ISBN: 0-7643-1038-0]

The Tigers were constantly modified during production. This book describes the modifications and when they were made. If you want to study a certain Tiger, you have to check the basics in this book. A must have!

Tiger1&2

2000
174 pages
€ 29.65

Tiger I & II - Kampf und Tactic [German version]- Thomas L. Jentz, Podzun-Pallas
[ISBN: 3790906913]

This book is also available in an English version. I expected it to be of the same quality as "DW to Tiger1", but it is far less. Apart of some nice line drawings of the grenades you won't find technical data here. Like the title says; the book handles combat and tactics. Certainly interesting, but not necessary for me at the moment.

The Tiger1 Heavy Tank

1993
48 pages
€ 9,36

Tiger I Heavy Tank 1942-1945 - Tom Jentz, Hilary Doyle, & Peter Sarson, Osprey New Vanguard No.5, Osprey Publishing, London 1993.
[ISBN: 1-85532-337-0]. S/C 48pp.
Basic Tiger1 info with a mostly commonly known Tiger photos and some interesting drawings. A friend returning from Japan, gave me the Japanese version of this book. So I am not sure about the text...

trail-of-tigers

2002
134 pages

Trail of the Tigers - Ron Klages [No ISBN number]
This book describes which Tiger went where and what happened to it. Apart of being interesting for historians, the book is of interest for modellers also, because it is a link between books like "D.W. to Tiger1", which provides information about Tiger1 production modifications, and the next step; Unit specific modifications and markings. Looking at the data this book contains, you realize that it must have been an enormous job to put all this data together. Unfortunately Ron Klages has passed away and to my knowledge it is no longer obtainable.

€ 30,00

Inside the Tiger I - Jean Restayn, Histoire&Collections
[ISBN: 2913903967]

Ordered in 1995. Now, 2007 the order has been cancelled for the fifth time because publication date is postponed.
I expected a lot from this book, but now I think it is best to forget about it until we get confirmation that it is really available in the shops.

Panzertaktik

2000
512 pages
€ 68,00

Panzertaktik - Wolfgang Schneider, J.J. Fedorowicz Publishing
[ISBN 0-921991-52-5]

Not enough space here for a correct description of this highly recommended book that is loaded with photos and provides us with insight in the use of the panzers.

Tiger im Kampf 1

They are expensive, but TIK1 and TIK2 are a must for detailed study of a certain Tiger. In these books you can find out about a Tiger's history whilst also having a good chance for finding photos of it.

Tiger im Kampf 2

450 pages
€ 66.00

Tiger im Kampf - Normandie

300 pages
€ 44.00

Tiger im Kampf - Die Einsätze in der Normandie - Wolfgang Schneider [ISBN: 393510703X]

This third book is completely different from TIK1 and TIK2. It is about the battles in Normandy, which are described in detail. Very interesting to read, and learn how the Tigers were used, but no must for completing a model.

spielberger-panther

1999
335 pages
€ 36,00

Panther & it's variants - Walther J. Spielberger - Hilary L. Doyle, Schiffer books
[ISBN: 0887403972]
Der Panzer-Kampfwagen Panther und seine Abarten (Original German version) [ISBN 3-87943-527-8]

When I bought this book, I was focussed mainly on the Tiger I, not the Panther. I saw the book and bought it at once because it contains a lot of useful information regarding the Tiger also.
Highly recommended to everyone willing to learn more about the Panthers and Tigers.

Der Panzer-Kampfwagen Tiger
